Gregg August Sextet: “One Peace” (Iacuessa Records)
Στο πέρασμα του από την Ευρώπη και ειδικά στα δύο χρόνια που κράτησε τη θέση του μπασίστα στη La Orquestra Ciutat της Βαρκελώνης, ο Gregg August γνώρισε την κουλτούρα των λατίνων. Μέσω αυτής ενδιαφέρθηκε για τη λατινοαμερικάνικη μουσική και γυρνώντας στην Αμερική μελέτησε με τον μπασίστα Andy Gonzalez και έπαιξε στο γκρουπ του Ray Barretto. Όλα αυτά μεταφέρθηκαν στο πρώτο του CD “Late August” που ήταν ποτισμένο με λατινοαμερικάνικους ρυθμούς, αλλά περιορίζονται στην καινούρια του δουλειά κι έτσι το “One Peace” μένει απερίσπαστο στη straight τζαζ.

Το ότι εκτός από εξαιρετικός μπασίστας είναι και πολύ καλός συνθέτης, αλλά και το ότι το σταθερό του γκρουπ περιλαμβάνει σπουδαία ονόματα της νέας γενιάς, γίνεται εμφανές από το πρώτο κιόλας κομμάτι του CD. Ο August με τον Luis Perdomo (πιάνο) και τον E.J. Strickland (τύμπανα) στο rhythm section και ο Myron Walden (άλτο), ο Yosvany Terry που εναλλάσσεται με τον Stacy Dillard (τενόρο) και ο John Bailey (τρομπέτα) στα πνευστά, φτιάχνουν ένα σεξτέτο με καθαρό, βασισμένο στο χαρντ μποπ ήχο που με σταθερό πάτημα κινείται διαρκώς μπροστά, αν και κάπου κάπου εκτρέπεται προσωρινά στους πλάγιους δρόμους του Ornette Coleman (στο “Contradiction” και σε ορισμένα περάσματα του “Nastissimo”). Πλούσια αρμονικά περιγράμματα, υποδειγματικά δομημένα σόλο και τέλεια αίσθηση του ρυθμού, ντύνουν τις όμορφες μελωδίες, όλες γραμμένες από τον μπασίστα. Συνολικά ένα άλμπουμ που επιβεβαιώνει την τάση να συναντάμε τη σπουδαία μουσική ολοένα και περισσότερο μακριά από τα φώτα της δημοσιότητας.

an english version of the review

Gregg August’s stay in Europe and especially his two-year tenure as the bassist of La Orquestra Ciutat in Barcelona, made him familiar with the Latin culture. This led him to be interested in Latin-American music and after returning to the states he studied with bassist Andy Gonzalez and played with the group of Ray Barretto. All these were conveyed to his debut CD that was imbued in latin rhythms, but they are not equally tangible in “One Peace”, his second album as a leader, which direction is straight ahead jazz.

The fact that he is an incredible bass player and a gifted composer too and that his working group includes high-class players of the new generation, is being felt right with the opening track. August along with pianist Luis Perdomo and drummer E.J. Strickland at the rhythm section and Myron Walden (alto sax), Yosvany Terry (tenor sax) who is replaced by Stacy Dillard on some tracks and John Bailey (trumpet), form a sextet with clear, hard-bop based sound, which stepping on solid ground moves continually forward, although it sporadically diverts onto the oblique Ornette Coleman routes (in “Contradiction” and occasionally in “Nastissimo”). The melodies, all penned by August, are embellished with rich harmonic outlines, perfectly crafted solos and impeccable sense of rhythm. It has been a common place that we more and more often meet great music away from the limelight and this album gives us additional evidence about that trend.
